Blogging Basics: Using Social Media to Promote a Post

Last week we hit up every single linky that we could find to promote that ONE post.  How did that work for you?  Did you get sick of the linkies?  Yeah well, go through your analytics and see which ones sent you the most traffic – try to link up to the top 3 or so every week and see an increase in your overall blog traffic!

Ok, let’s loo at mine!  At this time last week, I had 67 page views of my Top Recipes post from Southern Mom Cooks.  This week, I have 312! No, it didn’t reach my goal of 500 – however, it is my number 3 most viewed post for that time!  Great, right?

My Goal for next week is to have 750 page views on it!

How will I do it?  I ma going to do a couple things:

#1 – I am going to go through the posts that I link to within the post I want to promote.  I will find one that I like and put a pretty prominent link to it within.  Then, I will promote THAT post via the top 10 linkies that sent me traffic last week.

#2 – I am going to promote heavily via Twitter and FaceBook and am going to tell you how!

To Promote Your post on Twitter & FaceBook:

Step One, carefully go through your post and break it down.  What do you want people to learn from it?  What do you want them to “take away”?  What do you want them to do?  Write it down!

Step Two:  Looking through your post and through your notes, craft at least 14 Tweets.  Use 2  -3 relevant hashtags per tweet and include a shortened link.  You can even do some twitpics and have those as tweets.  Use questions, shocking statements, something off the wall.  Once you have 14 tweets you are happy with, schedule them to go out 2 per day every day for the rest of the week!

**TAKE NOTE**  If you want to know how popular a hashtag is, be sure to visit www.hashtag.org!

Step Three: Craft 3 Facebook posts and plan (or schedule) them throughout the week.  Pictures on your fan page do so much better!  Take a screen shot, create a picture that quotes something from your article, use an image fro your article.  Upload it to facebook so it is nice and pig and then write.  if you mention a company or another blogger within your post be sure to tag them!

Step #4:  Each day, scan through Twitter or search out your hashtag and see if your post will answer anyone’s questions!  If you can answer 3 posts per day with your link that is a great goal to make.

Step #5:  If you have a networking group, push out some of your tweets through them!  Have a really great one?  Use JustRetweet to get some other tweeters to promote your post!

Have fun and be sure to keep me updated within the comment on how things are going!

Next week’s task is going to get more difficult so why don’t you start preparing for it this week?  Go through your post again and see how you can spin off it for more posts.  You are going to come up with 5 working draft titles that coordinate with that post.  We are doing it with this week because those titles can be made from some of your tweets!

Blogging Basics: Increase the Popularity of One Post (with linky)

Last week we wrote a post that we are determined will be super popular, this week we are going to begin marketing it.  We will focus on one thing each week for the next few weeks.  Hopefully we will all have a super popular post AND will have learned to market some of our less popular posts.

Capture2 Blogging Basics: Increase the Popularity of One Post (with linky)

Before we begin, go into your analytics again and find that post… you only need to set your timeline from the day you wrote the post through today.  Write down all the stats of that one post so you know where you have started.  We will be checking this thing each week over the next few weeks.  My post, Top Ten Recipes, has received 67 page views since it posted on the 11th.  My goal is to have 500 page views of it by this time next week.

This week let’s think of linkies.  We all know them, they are all over the web!  Maybe you only do Wordless Wednesday or Menu Plan Monday each week.  Or maybe you spend 90% of your online time linking things all over the worldwide web.  Either way, this week I want you to find a few linkies each day to link up your popular post.  Be sure it fits the category.  THEN, on every linky that you link up to, choose 5 people to go visit and comment on.  I suggest pinning, stumbling, and/or tweeting the posts you visit, also!  Help your fellow man and you might be surprised at who helps you!

I have heard many people say they don’t know what to say in a comment… here’s a great draft!

Hi!  I am stopping by from the XXXX linky because your XXXX caught my eye!  I just love XXXX and even Tweeted, Pinned, and Stumbled you.  Great job!

Be sure to use the link to your full post in commentluv, in the website link of the form, and if there isn’t a commentluv or website place, put it within the comment like I did above.  Ta da! Comment done, now move on to the next one.

Feel free to leave your link in the comments and I will come visit!  See ya’ around the blogosphere!

Blogging Basics: Make a Popular Post Using Your Old Content

So, it has been a while since I talked about anything having to do with actual blogging.  So, you have spent so much time working on goals, working on stats, working on your social media accounts.  Now, let’s work on a post.  I want you to write a post that will be forever popular!

One of my most popular posts on this site is my top 12 household notebook sites post.  I wrote it back in January 2010 and to this day (over 2 years later) it is still getting linked to and still getting traffic!  It isn’t some phenomenal post… there really is no reason it is so popular.  However, I know how to do it again and do it even better!

Go to your Google Analytics account and set your timeline from the very first day of your blog all the way to today!  My screen shots are of my Southern Mom Cooks site since that  one is newer and easier to take pictures of. Besides, it has way less traffic and way less content making my tutorial that much easier. LOL!

Then, you want to go take a gander at your content to see what is most popular.  This will help you decide what type of post to create.  I created a Ten Most Popular Recipes post for Southern Mom Cooks that will be going live over there on Friday.

Here’s my screen shot

As you may be able to tell (or may not), the top 10 posts are NOT all recipes.  So, I just continued scrolling until I had 10 of them.

Choose your top ten whatevers and write a post.  Don’t forget to include your keyword basically 1 time per 100 words within your post.  Also, name your picture using your keyword and put your keyword near the beginning of your title. Then go to Flicker or similar (or take your own) and come up with a great picture for that post.  I simply made a collage of a few of the foods from my recipes – you might be able to do something similar. Be sure you watermark your picture in some way.

Once you have a FABULOUS post, share it with me via email, and then check back over the next few weeks as we learn to market this popular post. What is your goal?  My goal is to get 2,000 views on that post!  Can I do it?

Remember, keep doing everything you are doing with your normal blogging… this is an extra few minutes per week to increase the popularity of one post!

So, you decided to take the plunge and become a blogger!  Now, you are writing fairly regularly about your chosen topic and finding that you don’t know as much as you thought you did.  Or that you are about to run out of stuff to say!  What do you do?

#1 – Start browsing the internet to find a few products that fit your niche.  Sign up to be an affiliate and start writing about the products!

#2 – Visit your local library and get a few books on your chosen topic (or purchase them so you can mark them to your hearts content!)!  I write about homeschooling and organizing pretty regularly.  I consider them big topics between my blogs and have quite a few books to help me come up with new things.
