The Learning Curve for Boys: Is it Different?

image thumb3 The Learning Curve for Boys: Is it Different?

Studies show there are real differences between boys and girls in terms of brain chemistry, maturation and how they learn best.  Technologies such as PET scans and MRIs have already found “at least 100 differences in male and female brains,” and there are likely more discoveries to come.

The following information uncovers some key insights into boys and how they learn:

Reasoning

Brain-based research shows that there are major differences between boys and girls in terms of reasoning and brain development, which leads to differences in general understanding of concepts as well as test-taking abilities.

  • Boys “tend toward symbolic texts, diagrams, and graphs” that “stimulate the right hemisphere, which is where many boys are more developed.”
  • They typically use abstract and deductive reasoning to reach conclusions, meaning that they are able to learn a general concept and then apply that concept to other individual cases.
  • Boys’ proficiency in deductive reasoning leads to greater success on multiple choice tests, particularly those where answering questions quickly is an advantage, like the SAT.

Movement

In order to learn most effectively, boys must stay active, engaged and motivated.

  • Staying active is an integral piece of effective learning for boys. “Movement seems to help boys not only stimulate their brains, but also manage and relieve impulsive behavior.”
  • Movement increases blood flow to the limbic region of the brain, allowing boys to process emotions and reduce stress.
  • “Physical exercise is essential for… boys.  It helps calm them, helps them sleep at night, and helps them perform learning tasks.”

Structure

A highly structured and action-packed day keeps boys’ minds alert and active.

  • Daily structure helps stimulate motivation, goal-orientation and time management skills.  In fact, the highly structured, full-day schedules of top boarding schools and military academies can be particularly beneficial
  • Task-oriented work and active interaction with learning materials increase the amount of information absorbed by boys’ brains.
  • A structured plan gives a boy’s brain a direct route to a goal, managing stimulation from other sources and increasing focus.
  • Calendars can be useful tools for boys since they provide visual and spatial representations of what they need to accomplish and how much time they have to complete the task.

Motivation

Boys tend to get bored more easily than girls.

  • The male brain literally requires a “recharge” between tasks, meaning that the brain goes into a rest state before moving on to something new.
  • “Boys require more and varying stimulants to keep them attentive” and to decrease the length of time that the brain is at rest.
  • Focusing on a goal maintains boys’ concentration and paves the way for success both in school and in life beyond the classroom.

Teams

Both boys and girls can benefit from working on teams through learning about cooperation and teamwork.

  • Boys differ from girls because they tend to “[pick] leaders quickly and [focus] right away on goal orientation.”
  • When supervised carefully, teams can be used to promote healthy competition, which often serves as strong motivation for boys to learn and succeed.
  • “Boys tend to work out codes among themselves and within their own cognitive processes, and rely on coded language to communicate,” which strengthens the bond within a team, while increasing learning through the use of symbolism and abstract thinking.

Boys Do Learn Differently

In summary, boys follow a unique learning curve, one that can be significantly enhanced in an environment that appreciates the differences between genders.  A setting that recognizes the cognitive, emotional and social processes which motivate boys to reach their full potential is the optimal learning environment for boys.

When I stuck it to the wall, before I got it attached.

My thoughts

I absolutely love these!  It is serious hard work to get that vinyl connected to the tape and then attached to the wall, but I figure if it was easier then I would have to worry about it coming down easier!  No worries there!  My kids all love it, I love it, and all of my family thought it was really cool when I showed them!  My girls also loved the butterflies for their room!  My girls even finished off attaching the butterflies, because they were so excited!  I was really glad that it came with the scraper, to help the vinyl get stuck to the wall!  I strongly suggest attaching it where you want it and just swiping the scraper over it a couple of times and then leaving it up there for a couple hours and then working hard to “scrape” it on.  I love the ones I got and I had a HARD time choosing!  There are so many cool vinyl options, and they even have wall murals and you can make your own vinyl!  It’s a renter’s dream!  There are some super cool ones if you’re a homeschooling parent too!  They have chalkboard and dry-erase vinyl maps and calendars!  Fantastic!

You can buy your own Cutie Owl here!  Mine was 33″ by 19″ and I think it’s perfect for going over a crib!  There are tons of awesome options and you can change the colors!  There are a ton of awesome vinyl stickers and you can even make your own!

Must Read: Valuable Opportunities for Your Homeschooled Teen!

kozziinc Must Read: Valuable Opportunities for Your Homeschooled Teen!

Most homeschooling parents have an interest in, if not a downright passion for, saving money. As a result, most of us are comfortable and familiar with consignment stores, coupons, sales and repurposed goods. We look to save money on everything from utility bills to grocery store spending

When it comes to school curricula and supplies, however, many of our frugal ways get pushed aside. We fight, but sometimes lose, the battle to fill our bookshelves with more brightly colored workbooks and newly published textbooks than our children will need in a lifetime. As educators, we want to be certain that our children have access to all the materials they will need in order to attain success in life. Fortunately for our pocketbooks, hands-on, real-life experiences will often provide better lessons than expensive textbooks.

When our children are young, low-cost educational opportunities are easy to come across. Museums, libraries, symphonies, stage theaters, nature centers, zoos and park departments often offer free or inexpensive programs that provide our children with exciting occasions for exploration.

By the time children are making the transition from childhood to adolescence and beyond, they’ve out grown many of these activities. Fortunately, economical learning opportunities continue to abound. Granted, many aren’t as fun as making apple cider at the local nature center, but these activities are the stuff of ‘real life’, for which we are continually preparing our offspring.

5 Economical Educational Opportunities for Your Homeschooled Teenager

1. Open a mutual fund or Roth IRA account with, and for, your child.

For children, investing in a mutual fund is just about as real as it gets. Obviously, this process will require an outlay of cash from your son or daughter, but it is money that will grow along with your child. Set an appointment with your financial advisor who can explain the wonders of compound interest, the rule of 72, cost averaging and investing for the future.

2. Create and regularly update a resume

Your student need only spend a few minutes online to find sites that display the most current and preferred resume formats. He can even use a template that only requires a ‘fill in the blank’ approach. You and your child will likely need to sit down together to review dates, responsibilities and achievements associated with various volunteer activities, organizational memberships as well as involvement in academic and sports programs.

Encourage your child to contact former or current coaches, group leaders and bosses who will write letters of recommendation that he can keep in a file with his resume.

3. Contact local business for job-shadowing opportunities

Does your daughter dream of attending veterinary school? Becoming an attorney? Selling real estate? Encourage her to contact local professionals, businesses and non-profit organizations about spending a day or two observing work place undertakings. Many people are delighted to share their insights with inquisitive youngsters. Prior to the visit, you can help your child prepare a list of relevant questions that will enhance her visit.

This is not only an option for students with a plan. Teens who are unsure or undecided can pursue job shadowing opportunities as a mean of exposing them to careers they may have never considered.

4. Help your teenager develop telephone skills

This may seem obvious or trivial, but please consider the lack of effective communication skills in today’s world. How many teens actually ever actually speak into a phone or even write a personal communiqué of more than 140 characters? Although the old-fashioned telephone call may seem irrelevant to a teen, people do still need to be able to verbally communicate in an efficient and polite manner.

5. Schedule a night each week for your teen to prepare the family dinner.

Considering the hectic schedules that many families keep these days, this activity will require some advanced planning. You will probably have to sit down with your child and the family calendar to decide which night will work best for him to serve as head cook for the family.

You will also need to determine if there will be a budget, dietary requirements (such as insisting on at least one produce serving) or restrictions (such as a ban on boxed meals). Then let your child have access to your cookbooks, recipe file or internet food sites. He can prepare a shopping list and discuss with you any cooking jargon or techniques that he is unfamiliar with.

Be sure to alert your family in advance that your teen will be cooking so they can be prepared to offer praise for the meal!

Homeschooling is truly the ultimate educational adventure. Learning never ends and the opportunities for preparing our children for success are available in the most ordinary of our daily interactions and activities.
