Cut the Acidity of Tomatoes

If you’re like most families or amateur cooks, pasta and tomato sauce are staples in your kitchen and on your dinner tables. Fresh tomatoes, canned tomatoes, and sauces have different levels of acidity and can really vary in flavor profiles. If you find yourself making a sauce or adding fresh tomatoes to a dish and it is too acidic, there are a couple of tricks to cut it back. Try adding a pinch of sugar, some grated cheese, or milk/cream to the recipe. This will cut the tomatoes acidity and make the dish more balanced in flavor.

Double It

If you are seeking to stretch your dollar and cut your time in the kitchen, chose recipes that serve double-duty and can be eaten in a variety of ways. Chili, for instance, can be eaten straight, over pasta or on hot dogs. Once you find a good multi-purpose recipe; double it. Freeze what you don’t eat quickly. It will save you time and money.

The Amazing Non-Stick Spray

Non-stick cooking spray can be used in a variety of ways beyond the obvious. You can spray measuring cups and bowls before using them to make sure ingredients slide right out. You can also spray wraps and and foil before freezing items. This will keep the wrap and foil from sticking when they freeze.

Baking Soda Everywhere

Baking soda has a lot of uses. You’re probably already aware of its use in the freezer and refrigerator to absorb odors, but it also is found in many recipes and can even be used to create self-rising flour in the event you don’t have yeast. Another good trick; use baking powder and water to get the smell of onions or garlic off your hands.

Cut Down Trips to the Trash

Keeping a bowl for all of your cuttings, scraps and trash handy while you do prep work can save a lot of time walking back and forth to the trash can. If you don’t believe it, try tracking how much time you spend going back and forth next time you are cooking. You’ll be amazed.

Boiling Water

Boiling water is a part of so many recipes and who hasn’t stood there waiting for the water to boil while people go hungry? A good idea for eliminating the wait is to make sure the tap water is as hot as possible before filling the pot. This will cut the heat time drastically. Also, think about setting the pot of water on the stove before you even start cooking. This way it will be ready for you when the time comes. Just be careful not to allow it to boil over or evaporate.

No More Tears

To reduce the amount of gases released by onions when you cut them, put them in the freezer for ten to fifteen minutes before cutting. And always remember to breath through your mouth when cutting. Both of these tricks will cut down the tears.

Garlic Whack

You’ve probably seen chefs do this on television; before cutting garlic cloves, place the flat side of the knife down on top of it and give it a good whack. This will allow you simply pull the skin off for easier cutting.

Prep Work

Take a page out of a professional chef’s playbook and do your cutting and prep-work in advance of actually getting to the steps of cooking. By separating out the tasks and doing them in advance, you’ll find yourself much more prepared to focus on the cooking tasks and really follow recipes more closely. Stopping to cut, chop, mix and dice while trying to cook can break momentum and create stress.

Mise en Place

This is an old cooking term that builds on the prep work theme above. It’s a French phrase that means "everything in its place." It’s a great rule to live by in the kitchen. Keeping an organized and logical cooking station where everything has its place and is set up in advance, can drastically cut the time you spend looking for things, traveling back and forth to the drawers, cabinets, and trash.

Getting Organized: Drafts and Templates (Tackling Email part 3)

Picture3 thumb Getting Organized: Drafts and Templates (Tackling Email part 3)

Last week we talked about how I clean up my inboxes and I alluded to my email templates and such.  This week, we are going to actually discuss all the items that I have drafted and saved.  I don’t just copy and paste and hit send for the most part, but I will discuss it more in detail below!

Why do you want drafted emails?  As your blog grows, so does the number of incoming emails and eventually you have to figure out a better way to deal with them than just typing a response to the couple thousand incoming emails.  So, you spend some time developing really good emails and then save them.  Each time you find yourself saying the same thing over and over, make a new draft!

image thumb21 Getting Organized: Drafts and Templates (Tackling Email part 3)

I have 21 pre-written emails in my drafts.  Sometimes this number goes up depending on what is happening.  For example:  during my holiday gift guide I had a few more in there.  Ok, so let’s discuss the types of emails I have in there.

1.  My most used draft – I have a draft that goes out to every pitch that doesn’t ask for anything specific.  Basically it thanks the sender for contacting me and quickly lists the types of coverage we offer at 3 Boys and a Dog.  Then, it gives a link to my media kit and social media links.  That’s it.

2.  App Reviews - Thanks for contacting me and then how I do app reviews.  I actually get a ton of app review requests these days and do not do them for free.

3.  Interview Requests – This is an email that explains how I do interview requests

4.  My Updated Stats - sometimes companies ask for my updated stats.  I try to update this draft a couple times per month.  It lists all three sites statistics including my social media stats.

5.  SF Stats - Social Fabric asks for different things than normal companies.  This is my response to them.

6.  Twitter Party Outreach - This includes a case study of one of my past Twitter Parties and an pre-written email to a company.  I have a few “x’s” in it that I fill out to personalize it per company.

7.  Button HTML - I have a few different buttons and such that I use.  This simply houses the HTML for them

8.  Travel - My response to companies that pitch me travel locations.

9.  Remodel Bullets - I was doing a house remodel and reaching out to companies about it.  This listed all the things I could do for a company and what I was asking in return.  I had to put this on the back-burner for a bit because I got slammed with Holiday Gift Guides.  I will be pulling this back out shortly.

10.  Winner Notice - The email that I send to giveaway winners.

11 – 21 – These are pretty specific to me so I don’t need to talk about them.  They basically include other outreach emails from Holiday Gift Guides to Back to School and Conference Sponsorship.

Hopefully this helps you plan your email drafts to help you speed up the “email inbox to zero” process!

Getting Organized: How I Handle My Email Daily (tackling email part 2)

Picture2 thumb Getting Organized: How I Handle My Email Daily (tackling email part 2)

Last week, I showed you how I organize my incoming email and discussed my different boxes. Today, I want to discuss my typical email handling per day!  I haven’t done much in the way of email for a couple days – it was the weekend, then a holiday, then I was sick.  So, I have lots of emails to work through.  This seemed like the perfect time to get this post done.

When I first start my day on the computer, I quickly skim through each of my inboxes (no more than 30 minutes in the morning) to see if there is anything in there that needs an immediate response and if so, I respond!

Then, I get my first set of blog posts done – that usually takes a couple hours.  After getting those blog posts completed, I then do another 30 minutes or so on email.  This time, I start deleting, responding, etc to those emails that can be handled in just a couple minutes.

The big question is, how do I do that bulk responding?  I do the following tasks in this order:

image thumb16 Getting Organized: How I Handle My Email Daily (tackling email part 2)

#1 – All pending blog comments get approved and answered if necessary.  So, I can delete them very quickly from my inboxes.  I can do this pretty easily by typing “comment” in the search bar of my inbox so that I only see those posts.  At this point, I also go in to each of my blogs and approve comments, delete spam, and respond to anything necessary.  (BTW.  this took my 3BoysandaDog inbox from 446 to 216!)

image thumb17 Getting Organized: How I Handle My Email Daily (tackling email part 2)

#2 – Bulk Responses to PR Folks get handled next.  I can’t do them all because people don’t use the same wording.  But, I start doing quick searches in my inboxes for things like “opportunity”, “review”, “release”, and “giveaway” then start answering them.  I have several emails that I have prewritten that respond to different types of marketing emails from how I handle app reviews to how I handle giveaways.  Depending on what the people are asking decides on which response they get. (as you can see below, that took my inbox from 216 down to 75)

image thumb18 Getting Organized: How I Handle My Email Daily (tackling email part 2)

#3 – Respond and Delete – Once I have the “easy” items gone, I can start going through things that don’t fit into the above categories and do the delete and respond (or respond and delete thing).  If they need an answer, they get answered.  I do this with all items that are left and that will only take about 2 minutes or less to handle.

After step 3, I typically try to mark out a few more things on my to do list and tackle some of my other main inboxes.

So, lets look at this – I spent about 1 hour really knocking out emails today and took my inbox total (counting everything except the drafts folder) from 1,146 emails to 719!  That hour was also spent writing this post, so the emails have taken me longer.  After a break from emails, I will come back, go through the newest ones to come in and start handling the bigger emails that will take more than a couple minutes to handle!.image thumb19 Getting Organized: How I Handle My Email Daily (tackling email part 2)

#4 – Inbox to Zero!  Now, I have 20 emails in my 3BoysandaDog inbox.  These are emails that will take me more than 2 minutes to handle.  As I said above, I typically move on to other things at this point and then around lunch, I hit the inboxes again pretty hard.  On Wednesdays, (which today is) I try to get those inboxes to zero.  It doesn’t always happen, but I can do it sometimes!

How do you crawl out of the email hole?
