Homemade Gift for Kids – Itty Bitty Building Set

Sharing is caring!

With the holidays fast approaching, I am making my list and checking it twice!  I have been working on making many of my gifts this year because it is more fun and my kids have WAY too much stuff.

In fact, we have amassed a list of 101 DIY Gifts for Kids over at Kids Activities Blog that can cover almost any age or desire!

But what about stocking stuffers?

I have three boys {sound familiar?} and so I have to get a bit more creative when it comes to stockings.  No nail polish or hair clips will do!

They want to play, fight and build!

That is where the idea for the Itty Bitty Building Set came in.  What if a building toy was miniaturized to fit into a stocking or be slipped into a pocket when no one was looking?

This gift would be easy to make in bulk and hand out for classroom gifts or as a holiday party favor.

Materials:

  • Condiment container – mine came from a local taco drive through and was the perfect size once the salsa was finished and cleaned out.  They sell these containers, but likely you have some in your recycling bin.
  • Homemade Play Dough – Check out this play dough recipe or a list of our favorite 10 ways to make play dough.  I won’t tell if you buy play dough in bulk and portion it out into the little containers.
  • Toothpicks – I recommend including at least 17 toothpicks because that is the minimum needed for a 3D house which seems to be the first thing that comes to mind to build.
  • Rubber band – secure the toothpicks together with a rubber band.
  • Ribbon – Tie the toothpick pack to the play dough container with some festive ribbon.
  • Instructions {optional} – If you are giving this to someone who you won’t be with when they open it, you might want to put a little note inside that gives a hint to roll the dough into balls and use as the corners of anything they want to build.

And that is all there is to it.

Simple.  Easy.  Cheap.
