When going to a conference, you what to be comfortable, but you also want to look good. First impressions are quite important in the business world and you are going to be meeting many people that you want to do business with.
As most of us are stay-at-home moms, we don’t necessarily have the wardrobe to look great for 3 solid days and none of us wants to take a million items with us. So, how can we pull off looking fabulous and being comfortable without spending a fortune on clothes we will only wear once?
Here are a few simple tips to dressing for conference success on the cheap:
Step #1 – Make a plan. How many days will you be gone? Do you have themed parties to attend while at the conference? Can you wear the same thing on the flight there as you can on the flight home? Make your plan and write it down.
Your plan might look something like this:
- Flights to location –
- Meeting with friends for dinner –
- “Slumber Party” with friends –
- Early morning walk
- Conference meetings all day
- 80’s Themed Party
Day 3: etc
Step #2 – Shop your closet! Now that you have your plan written out and know the number and type of outfits you need, it is time to start finding those outfits. Go through your closet. You don’t need all new clothes, because more than likely no one you will see this weekend has ever seen you, much less your clothes! Think about your clothes, a pair of black slacks or great fitting jeans always looks great and either can be worn more than one – aka, saving room in the suitcase!
Step #3 – Flesh it out! Maybe, you have been through your closet and just can’t get enough outfits for all the necessary things – it is time to hit Goodwill or the sales racks for the extra pieces.
Step #4 – Accessorize! Now that every outfit is planned to perfection, it is time to plan your accessories for the outfits. You need to be thinking of this while completing step #3 as you don’t want to have to make 2 trips into town. Think bold! The accessories are going to make those black pants look like 2 totally different outfits. What do you have around your house that you can use to dress yourself up and make yourself stand out?
- Big, bold jewelry
- Flowers for your hair
- Great jacket (it is usually cold inside the buildings anyway)
- That’s it! Have fun playign dress up. Recruit a girl friend to help you choose and “design” your killer conference outfits and remember to get it all into a carry on to save money.
