Math is not my favorite subject, but apparently it’s pretty important out there in the “real world”. :) Of course, if you’re going to learn about math, you might as well have some fun doing it, right? Today, we’ll be learning all about math while making some tasty Valentine’s Day sugar cookies. In the spirit of true confession, I have to tell you that many of these pictures were taken while we were making Christmas sugar cookies — but you get the idea!
Let’s get started!
What You Need:
- Sugar Cookie Recipe and Ingredients (Here’s an easy recipe from All Recipes)
- Rolling Pin
- Cookie Cutters
What You Do:
For this post, I won’t be giving a play-by-play like normal. Instead, I’ll focus on math (or pre-math) lesson opportunities throughout the cookie making process.
Measuring Ingredients: Counting or Fractions
Let your child count the number of cups of flour (and whatever else) as they dump them into the bowl. If your kids are older, have them figure out how many 1/2 cups are needed if 2 cups of flour are required for the recipe.
Rolling the Dough: Thick and Thin
As you start with a giant hunk of dough on the well-floured table, talk about how thick it is and how the dough is much too thick for a cookie cutter. Roll out the dough together and comment on how it is getting thinner. Estimate when the dough is thin enough for a cookie cutter to push through.
Cookie Cutters: Sizes
Take a look at your cookie cutters before you begin. If you’ve got a set like mine, you probably have multiple sizes of the same shape. Take some time to talk about big, little, and medium sized cutters. Ask your child which cutter is the biggest or the smallest.
Cookie Cutters: Shapes
Lay out your cookie cutters and ask your preschooler to identify the different shapes. You could also talk about “same and different” while looking at the different shapes.
Cutting Cookies: Counting and Estimation
After you’ve rolled out some dough, have your child estimate how many cookies they can cut out of the dough before re-rolling it. Count together as your push the cutter into the dough and decide how accurate your estimation was.
Enjoy your Cookies!!!
