I love anything that is handmade for my children.
Honey Lime Designs is an all-natural, handmade children’s boutique, specializing in custom designed dolls. The artist and designer, Kristy Hudson, lives in British Columbia, Canada with her two little girls, Olivia and Madeleine. Hudson comes from a long line of painters, potters, glass and dough artists. After her second child, Hudson really saw a void in the toy market for all-natural playthings. She started out by making smaller baby toys, like taggie blankets and pacifier clips and then decided to start designing dolls. Hudson immerses herself in the process, saying, “I really love the thought that children may take comfort in the things I make”.
Hudson takes the personalization piece to heart as well. Most people will let her know the basic coloring of the doll and will search through her fabric swatches online for inspiration. Others are fairly specific and wish to look at pictures of different fabric. She then usually prepares the dolls in stages depending on how much time she has, so she will cut everything out in one session and then spend some time stitching it up and stuffing in another session or two. Her favorite techniques are to try and do something a little unique for each doll. It may be a flower in the hair or some embroidery on the bodice, or maybe even a different style of shoes. The cloth dolls are made entirely of cotton and wool blend felt and then stuffed with fiber fill. Ultimately Hudson’s favorite supplies to work with are ones that are as natural as possible.
For me, I love the heart and soul that goes into each one of her creations. After showing her a picture of my daughter, she created this beauty:
