5 Boredom Buster Preschool Activities

Summer Vacation!

Exciting! Thrilling!  Adventurous!

Until….. you hear those words.. “I’m bored!”

True, you don’t usually hear a preschool express these sentiments, but you know that something is amiss when the fighting has escalated and there’s a little too much whining going on!

Here’s 5 new ideas for you to try with your toddlers and preschoolers to bring about a change of pace.

#1 BINGO!

This isn’t traditionally thought of as a toddler or preschool game, but with a little help, it can be a lot of fun.  I know my 3 year old had a blast playing.  You can find Bingo sheets all over the internet, but we used an Upper and Lower Case Alphabet Sheet.   As you can see, we just used pennies to cover up the cards.

I also like the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Bingo idea over at Words of His Heart. It’s got adaptations for 2 and 3 year olds.

Free Printables has some really cute dinosaur bingo cards for pre-readers and even has a cute dino spinner to go with the cards!

#2 BUBBLES!

Of course, you probably already use bubbles, but sometimes putting bubbles in a nontraditional space changes everything!

Recently, we’ve used the bubble machine ($7 at Walmart — greatest toy) in the playroom and the bathtub and the kids have just gone crazy over it!

#3 OBSTACLE COURSE!

Recently, we were at a friends house and I noticed some of the “obstacle course style” things her parents had set up in the backyard.  The kids loved exploring, climbing, and jumping on these things and it was great for a change of pace!

This was just some simple boards, cement blocks and a tree stump.  However, it became a bridge and the beginning of many an adventure!

This is actually a sandbox covered with some plywood, but the kids loved jumping up and down on the lid!

#4 CREATION STATION

Ah, the beloved baby gate.  We don’t usually have these up, but during a brief stay at my parents house (during the great move), they were everywhere!  The older kids quickly took advantage of the lattice work and began tying and rigging all kinds of things to the gate.  An inventor’s station if you ask me!    You can create the same type of experience with bottles filled with whatever you have around your house.  Jump ropes were a huge hit and ended up getting tied to everything!    In fact, just today the kids rediscovered the jump ropes and created this pilot seat with them.

#5 START A PROJECT

I had been staring at those Barbie’s hair for a few weeks and was totally annoyed at all the tangles I was seeing.  Finally, I decided to tackle the tangles with some conditioner and a brush.  Of course, it didn’t take long for all the kids to gravitate towards the project, begging to help.  I handed over the reigns and was impressed at what a good job those preschoolers did!  Not only did it keep them super occupied that day, but it’s become a favorite activity — one the girls request again and again.
