Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
you formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!
Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,
how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared
before I’d even lived one day.Psalm 139:13-16 (The Message)
Author Annie F. Downs is passionate about today’s young women. So much so that she has channeled her enthusiasm in her thought-provoking debut book, PERFECTLY UNIQUE: Praising God from Head to Foot (Zondervan; $9.99; September 2012), which aims to help young women ages 13 to 18 build their self-esteem, value their individuality, and worship their Creator with the qualities He gave them.
Citing examples from her own life and drawing from the experiences of friends and other loved ones, Downs injects empathy and candor into her writing, establishing a connection to her audience by using a unique mix of engaging personal anecdote and honest discussions about life, resulting in a book that feels like a conversation with a best friend.
My Thoughts:
Where was this book when I was a young girl? Every young woman needs to read this book. Even I found the book useful and very thought provoking. The author Annie has a great way of writing as though she is speaking directly to you and she speaks in a manner that is comfortable and easy to read. The whole book felt like a conversation. I loved her honesty and story telling ability, I laughed, I cried and I feel as though I know her, sort of like if we ever met we could just sit down for a coffee and chat like we’ve known each other our whole lives.
The scripture references and the “Chew on this” section at the end of each chapter, make this a great book for a bible study or perhaps a mother/daughter study. I for one am really looking forward to reading this with my daughter, it’s the type of book that will stand through the ages, because it doesn’t matter what year it is, girls are always having thoughts of inequity and self-disgust and the stories that Annie writes about, the thoughts that went through her own head, are the same thoughts that are going through girls heads even now and will likely still be going through my daughters head in a few years when this book will be more suited for her to read. I would strongly encourage all girls aged 13-18 to read this book, I think it will change your life.
