Father’s Day Finger Painting

Sharing is caring!

Father’s Day – a day to celebrate Dad or Grandpa or that special guy in your life.  This year, my oldest is about 2 ½, so I wanted her to be able to make something “just from her” for her dad.   So, we decided to try a simple crayon resist finger painting picture.  Writing on eggs with white crayons works with eggs, so maybe it would work with paper too, right?  (By the way, it did work!)

Here’s what you need:

  • Paint (Water color works best, but we used finger paints for little hands)
  • Crayon
  • I Love Dad Printable
  • Picture of Dad

Here’s what we started with:

Just write a message to dad in a light colored crayon.  You can also grab this great super cute free printable from Kelli. It’s got the same message AND a place for a 4×6 photo!  If you use the printable, just trace over the words with crayon.  Make it pretty bold.  I discovered later I should have made my picture look more like this:

Next, let the toddlers have it with finger paint.  I chose to use blue to provide a good contrast, but I think any color would work.   If you have older kids, use black watercolor paints.  That will make the crayon resist show up even better.

 Purple Picture (with white crayon)

 White picture (with yellow crayon)

Someone got a little distracted “painting” her fingernails!

I let the kids use brushes in hopes that the paint wouldn’t get too thick and the letters would show through.  Of course, the brushes were quickly abandoned!  Still, if you make the letters bold enough (maybe even color them in like block letters), the message will shine through!

Finished Products drying on the fridge.  The paint does get a little lighter when it’s completely dry.  If you want the letters to show up really well, make sure you use watercolor paints.

Not into making paint messes?  Just print off the printable and have your little one color it!

Have fun!  My husband couldn’t wait to take this masterpiece to work with him today!
