Girl Scout Stew

Growing up, my Mom cooked the same way I do now.  She would look in her Pantry until she found some things that she thought would go well together and feed us growing kids.  Then, we (like my kids) would pester her:

What are we having, but what is it called, what is it’s NAME!!!

until she finally made something up. LOL!  Supposedly, this stuff is called Girl Scout Stew because it can be cooked over a fire, but I don’t ever remember eating this over a fire during Girl Scout camping!  So, you know my theory!

NOTE:  This recipe calls for 2 muffins of Frozen Seasoning Blend!

This Kid friendly and Mom Approved recipes is super easy and yummy... It is basically like Spaghetti over Rice :-)

Ingredients
  • 2 cans beef broth
  • 1 small can of Tomato Paste
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1 can diced Tomatoes
  • 2 muffins of Frozen Seasoning Blend
  • 2 pounds beef
  • 2 cups rice
  • ¼ stick butter
Instructions
  1. Brown hamburger, drain, and add beef broth and tomato sauce.
  2. Season to taste – I typically add seasoning blend, a couple beef cubes, garlic, onion, salt, and pepper
  3. Prepare rice according to directions, adding ¼ stick of butter to water as well as salt
  4. Mix sauce with rice and serve.

  1. This looks like Spanish Rice to me.

    • Hi Sally, thanks for visiting. It isn’t actually Spanish Rice and you don’t HAVE to use rice in it. The original recipe (from my mother) uses Elbow Macaroni, but we had a TON of rice (long story) and I started making almost everything with Rice. LOL!

  2. We fixed something in Girl Scouts that we called Dump Stew. We took (sometimes meat) and cans of veggies and “dumped” them into the pot over the camp fire. (cans of corn, green beans, peas, carrots, potatoes) The liquid in the cans is enough that water doesn’t need added, but we Girl Scouts loved it! And, I make Dump Stew now, as an adult, with deer meat added that Dad or/and I have got.

    Having been a Daisy leader and also a Girlscout Camp Ranger’s wife for Umpteen years. I’ve found this is one of my family’s favorite recipes and its just what you have in the cupboard and on hand to put together Just as LuuLuu above mentioned! Venison is awesome as well added ! Your version is the best for a basic recipe for this “wonderful” Campfire/Dump stew! I have added canned Veg/beef soup as well to this .
    Oh and I so love your Frozen Seasoning Blend idea !! Its wonderful and I’ll put that to use right away.. Thank you so much , I know I’ll be back visiting on a regularly !!
