When asked by PR companies and other blogger friendly social outreach marketers, about certain demographics, you need to be able to answer the questions! If you have never done a reader survey, or haven’t done one in years, then how can you accurately answer these questions? You can’t! So, how do you decide what to include in the reader survey?
1. Demographics: who, what, when, where, why!
2. Questions about how much your blog influences them.
3. Questions about which posts they read.
4. Questions about why the read you.
5. Questions specific to your blog.
How do you get your readers to participate in the survey? Obviously, you can’t force them to do it, but you can beg.
Tips to a successful reader survey:
1. Be sure every single one of your readers is aware of it. If you have a newsletter, send it out! Tweet it and be sure to post it on FaceBook!
2. Make it painless! Most people don’t mind a couple questions, but no one has time for a 20 minute survey!
3. Offer an incentive! If people stand the chance of getting something out of it, they are more likely to respond.
4. Use a good service! Google Documents and Survey Monkey are very simple ways of taking a poll or reader survey. The neat thing about Survey Monkey is that is has many templates to help you come up with your questions!
Please take a few minutes to answer my 6 question survey and automatically be entered to win a 25 dollar Amazon Gift Certificate from me!

I tried several times to do your survey. It keeps saying that I haven’t answered question #4 when I have, even if I change the answer and hit submit again I get the same message.
I took your survey, but why do you need our complete address and phone number?

Took your survey, but it wouldn’t go through–kept saying that the starred question required an answer, even though the answer was already there.

Forgot to mention that whatever that stuff is on the left side of the page, I can’t read it and it gets in the way of reading anything on that side.
Thanks for the contest.
I took the survey. Thanks for this great site. I will revisit here more often.
Thanks for the opportunity. I may have submitted about a minute past the deadline because several questions required some sort of answer, apparently, but they weren’t marked as such, so I had to keep resubmitting. Like, I don’t have kids, so I left that part blank. I didn’t really have any suggestions for anything else to add or change about the site, and that was blank. I ended up putting “na” in every blank space for it to go through.
Bottom line, for anyone who’s creating a survey, mark each question as required if it is, and please give people an option to check in case the question doesn’t apply to them.
