Blogging Basics: Blog Maintenance

If you are a blogger, you know that there is so much more than just writing involved in this business.  We also have to keep up with all the backdoor stuff and the bigger the blog gets, the more stuff there is to keep up with.  When we first started it was no big deal, but all of a sudden we have to:

  1. keep up with the thousands of spam comments that come in each day
  2. update wordpress regularly
  3. be sure our blog is backing up
  4. check (and fix) any site errors
  5. update those million plug ins we just had to have
  6. be sure our site is up to speed
  7. be sure we aren’t going over our memory usage
  8. and many more!
  9. broken links
  10. funky redirects

If you are anything like me, this is certainly NOT something you have the time for and even if you manage to find the time, you don’t know how to do most of the stuff or are scared of messing it up.

Cathy, at Desperately Seeking WordPress understands that fear and lack of time.  That is why she offers a retainer service for only 28 dollars per month!  For only 28 dollars, you can have someone else worry about your site issues!  Plus, you have someone (a REAL PERSON!) to help you with other issues and point you in the right direction when you have a problem at a 30% discount.

That’s not all!  Do you keep up with stats, submitting to different blog directories,  plus the regular day-to-day stuff.  And people think we do this for the free stuff – HA!

Is there a topic or problem you would like to see me cover during Blogging Basics?  Be sure to check the full write up to see if I already have.  If not, please drop me an email and I will put it in the line up!

Having a retainer is a good idea but 28$ per month might be a bit too high. Updating WP and plug ins are just a matter of clicking a button. Akismet does a good job of fighting spam. broken links are site speed can be handled from free plug ins. A one time payment to install these things might be a good idea but in my opinion monthly fee is a bit high.

seriously?? Akismet holds thousands of emails each day for me and I have to scroll through every single one of them to find the 4 that aren’t actually spam.

Updating is NOT just a case of clicking a button – you have to back up, etc

Broken links are not the only site speed issue, you also have picture sizes etc.

I think paying someone 28 bucks a month to spend about 45 minutes handling the site is WELL worth it to me.

I have been wondering how much work goes into a blog. I can hardly keep up with reading the blogs that I follow because its just allot of info, specially a deal blogs. If I cant keep up with them I cant imagine maintaining a blog, keeping it up to date and with relevant information. I briefly considered creating a blog but for now I’m sticking with a tumblr that mostly allows me to just re-blog other posts I find interesting. I have a new found respect for mommy bloggers! Keep up the good work!!

Thanks so much, Angie! A great way to blog is to contact one of your favorite bloggers about possibly being a contributor. You can do the posting without all the other stuff. :-)

It seems like a lot of work to run a blog, especially on your own website versus a service like blogger. It seems like there are a lot more site issues that you have to be concerned about. I can’t even imagine. I know a little bit about websites and wordpress, plugins, etc….but it still confuses me.

You would be amazed. Blogger has totally deleted so many of my blogging buddies, I wouldn’t trust it with my blog. Plus, it has the same problems only you can’t get in the c-panel to fix them. :-)
