Blogging Basics: Rule of Five

December 1st, 2009 · 19 Comments

FaveDiets

I read something somewhere that said to apply the Rule of Five daily, to increase your blog readership.  Unfortunately, I can not remember where it was.  If anyone knows, please drop me an email so I can update this post to give credit where credit is due.

What is the Rule of Five?  In a nutshell, do 5 of 5 things everyday.  Off the top of my head, here is an example:

  1. Digg 5 posts – yours or other’s!
  2. Send 5 tweets – tweet your posts, respond to followers, talk about your day
  3. Comment on 5 blogs – be sure you make sense and sound interesting, people will click on you to see what else you have to say
  4. Respond to 5 comments – Answer comments! Let people know you care about what they say!
  5. Make 5 comments/posts in forum -  get your name out there and people will come check you out!

When I was working so hard to build my blog on Blogger, I did all the above and many more!  Since I have been at Mom Cube for almost 2 months, I realize that I have to start working to get my readership up here.  I get over 100 emails a day from all over, consequently I do not have time to do all the above and still post!  So, I have been working on a list today that I hope is do-able.  Mine is more of a weekly list.

Kelli’s Rule of FiveI have decided that I can do some things each day and still accomplish more than I am now. :-) Plus, I am hoping that posting about it will hold me accountable!

  1. Digg 1 post
  2. Visit 1 forum and comment
  3. Check Twitter
  4. Weekly Task #1
  5. Weekly Task #2

Monday

  1. Participate in Menu Plan Monday at Organizing Junkie
  2. Visit 5 MPM participants and comment

Tuesday

  1. Participate in Tackle It Tuesdays at 5 Minutes for Mom
  2. Visit 5 Tackle it Tuesdays participants and comment

Wednesday

  1. Check RSS feeds I follow and actually click through some and comment.
  2. Email day – respond to it, post, it, get it handled!

Thursday

  1. Respond to applicable comments (I receive emails of comments and can leave the in my inbox to work down each week!)
  2. Send emails about current contests (This is something I have slacked on and need to get back to)

Friday

  1. Share some link love!  Blog about something I saw, Twitter it, FaceBook it…. no matter what, get someone else’s link posted somewhere!
  2. Post giveaway links on 5 sites.

It is Tuesday!  One of the things on my to do list is:  Get Blogging Basics posts started!  I can now mark that off and I only have 13 more things on my Blog To Do list. :-)   That also means I have to add something to my list for next week…. Blogging Basics: Forums. :-)   I am going to tell you my favorite forums to visit!  Do you have one? Email me, if it isn’t one I use, I will include it AND a link to your site as the recommending person!

Kelly (great name BTW), people keep saying “if only I could figure out Digg” I kept saying the same thing for a long time. Finally, I made an account and clicked “submit new post” or something similar. It was very straight forward. :-)

Marj, thanks a bunch! I am excited about bringing my readers the neat little tid-bits I have picked up.

I was talking to a friend about how “newer” bloggers all seem to ask the same questions. I have decided to address them in normal people speak. :-) Hopefully people will learn something AND it will get me away from being a straight review blog. LOL!

Don’t worry, though… giveaways will still be happening! :-)

Michelle, LOL! I, obviously, like mine better, too! :-) It isn’t quite a much to do, but is the same principle. I hope y’all try these for a couple months and keep track of if it is working or not. I am thinking it is working… I just got back on track today (and completed my Tuesday tasks WOOT!) and already have 3 new Google Connect followers. :-)

Excellent Post! Very helpful! I think I often try to do much commenting and networking in one sitting, and then I’ll have a couple of weeks where I don’t feel like doing much visiting or commenting at all. I just get burned out. But this strategy makes a lot of sense. Some times a little can go a long way. Thanks for posting!

These are all great ideas. I try to respond to all my comments, but some days it’s just not possible. The rule of 5 is great, especially for busy times.

Jerri, I find that I, too, go through periods of different things. This is why I felt that I should share the “better” way of doing things. :-) Good luck! I hope you see a difference.

I know, right!? I do not respond to giveaway comments, because well… that would be nearly impossible. Otherwise, I try to respond :-)
